MATERIALS & FINISHES
The story of this material in New England began in the 19th century. Maritime clipper ships returning to Boston from the East used bundles of raw rattan as flexible packing material to protect valuable cargo on the rough seas. Once discarded on New England docks, locals quickly discovered the incredible strength and flexibility of the vines. It soon became the signature material of the famous Nantucket Lightship baskets woven by sailors at sea, and remained a highly prevalent staple of New England handcraft throughout the 1980s and 90s. If the texture of our carriers feels inherently familiar to you today, it is because this material has been woven into the backdrop of our region for generations.
Rattan is a naturally abundant, fast-growing climbing vine. Because it requires the living rainforest canopy to grow, its cultivation actively prevents deforestation and sustains the local ecosystem. Our materials are grown to full maturity and hold strict FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)and SVLK certifications, guaranteeing that they are ethically and sustainably harvested. By committing to these strict certifications, our materials directly support the local economies and livelihoods of the farming cooperatives who cultivate them.
Because rattan absorbs color well, we finish ours by hand in our Maine studio. The final basket is a structured, strong, and functional artwork.

NATURAL
Organic, Airy, Pure
The raw beauty of rattan, untouched. This finish celebrates the material in its purest form. It feels crisp, clean, and perfectly imperfect—an honest reflection of the material's origins, stripped down to its simplest nature. This finish pairs well with a pop of red, shines in a neutral room, and holds our attention as art and fashion.
TAN
Warm, Cafe, Classic
This finish bridges the gap between raw and refined, offering a golden hue that feels familiar. It provides a gentle warmth that anchors a room without weighing it down, pairing effortlessly with both vintage and modern interiors. Tan baskets warm up a natural home, pair well with undyed leather, light woods, beige tones and pastel hues.
SMOKED
Rustic, Sophisticated, Weathered
A complex, driftwood-inspired tone that feels aged by the elements. This finish offers a nuanced spectrum of greige and hazelnut, capturing the cool, quiet elegance of a coastal winter. It is moody, textured, and deeply dimensional. Smoked baskets feel at home with dark woods, navy, forest green, and lavender. Antique charm meets modern utility.
CHOCOLATE
Rich, Decadent, Deep
A dense, enveloping brown that brings immediate coziness to a space. With notes of espresso and dark earth, this finish offers a grounded sense of luxury. It creates a striking silhouette against lighter walls, emphasizing the weave's structure while retaining a warm, inviting character.
MIDNIGHT
Inky, Sleek, Dramatic
A deep, saturated tone that absorbs light and defines shape. Midnight gives any basket a modern edge. As the color is indigo-based, it can read blue in certain light. It is bold and uncompromising, transforming a rustic material into a sleek statement piece that feels powerful in any setting.
